The Greek and Egyptians are said to have developed door locks at about the same time. Interestingly, while the Greeks are credited with making simple bolt-locking mechanisms available to the middle class, the only the wealthy could afford the Egyptian pin tumbler locks. In the days of Homer, doors were tied shut with intricately knotted ropes. They are said to have been so cleverly laced that only the owner could untie them. Additionally, the superstitious beliefs of the times insured that no one would dare to tamper with the knotted ropes, lest they or their families would be cursed. Nowadays, there is no such superstition, and luckily our locks are better than a nicely tied rope. It is important to find a locksmith, especially a local locksmith, to consult with for the best available security system that does what superstition and knotted ropes once did.
